Google AdWords is no longer the number one online advertising platform anymore. I was shocked too when I heard the news. So what is the most popular venue for online advertising? Most advertisers are making more money with this venue than they ever did with AdWords.
It's Facebook! And with good reason. Facebook offers extremely targeted audience options. If you own a brick and mortar shop and want only local customers, you can show your ad to only those within a certain distance of you.
But the majority of online advertisers have websites that sell products or informational downloads. By advertising on Facebook, they can target only those people who are interested in what they have to offer. You can narrow your audience by age, sex, marital status, location, or education level. But the real treat with Facebook is narrowing it down by viewer's specific interests. So if you sell "fishing gear" you can only show your ads to those who put "fishing" in their interests field. How much more targeted can you get?
You can target people by where they work, or their job title. If you sold a product that helped increase productivity in a certain job field, say lawn care, you can target those people who work for a lawn care service or who list "lawn care maintenance" in their job field.
If you own a travel agency you can target those people who have anniversaries coming up, offering them a great deal on a hotel, cruise, airfare or tourist attraction.
You can target people on their birthday. If you own a restaurant you can offer them a free meal or dessert on their special day. Or a special offer on a bouquet of flowers.
If people have children, you can target baby items or children's toys by the age of their children.
Now that Facebook is the most popular website on the internet, even more popular than Google, you can reach the largest audience in one place, at one time! There really is no limit on how targeted your advertising can be.
