Left Brained and Creativity

For years, I worked in a job that required analytical skills, lots of facts and figures. They say when you work in this type of environment, you are employing the left side of your brain. And, for creative people they say it is the right side of your brain that you are using.
So here I am, for years working with my left-brain, thinking I am not really creative. Musicians, artists, and poets use their right brain far more often than those of us who work with facts and figures. So, you can imagine my hesitation when we started our craft business. To say my self-confidence was low was an understatement. Would I be able to employ that creative side of my brain after years of working with facts and figures?
Talk about moving out of your comfort zone, I was truly way out of my comfort zone. So, how did I do it? Well for me, I have a saying that I constantly remind myself of, it goes like this: “persistence prevails when all else fails.” And, let me tell you I had a lot of failures. As Ross Perot once said, “Failures are like skinned knees, painful but superficial.” With every failure, I learned something new. And, I was persistent; I refused to give up. I kept pushing myself, I read all I could, and I opened my mind to possibilities that I once would have ignored. And, now after 5 years I look at my work and truly amaze myself. Creating pieces of fused glass that I love, and better still, creating pieces that other people love and want to buy.
Now today, I am sure I am more right brained than left brained. The point in sharing my story with you is to give you a true-life example that you can change, that you can do whatever it is that you want to achieve, and that you have the ability within you as long as you also have the attitude of persistence and determination. Your own attitude will determine your success or failure. As Norman Vincent Peale once said, “Change your thoughts and you change your world.” Your attitude is a powerful thing; it can make your life difficult or it can make your life satisfying. It all depends on how you look at the events of your life and what action you take to allow you to live the life you perhaps once only dreamed of.
